I do wonder about those reported figures for Hotmail and Yahoo Mail since I have accounts on all three but haven't used my Yahoo Mail seriously for at least a decade and only use my Hotmail account for situations where I don't trust the recipient or the site I'm using it on.

I wonder how many of those 343 million Hotmail accounts and 266 million Yahoo Mail accounts are actually active? I have a feeling that with Gmail being the newer service and with it being a so much more usable, the proportion of active Gmail accounts will be much higher.

This worked, used the first recommendation on the list.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/939218

Log on as the administrator who installed Windows Home Server Connector.
Exit Windows Home Server Console.

Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:

cacls "%allusersprofile%\Application Data\Microsoft\Crypto\RSA\MachineKeys\*" /C /E /G Administrators:F

Exit the command prompt, and then log on the computer by using the administrator account that you want to use to restore the backed up files.

Many Many thanks for this article!

I just completed the installation of Win 7 Pro over Win XP on a Samsung F210 and it works!

I did something different though which might help others...I bought an external DvD read/write and made a disk for GParted. I also needed this as I had original XP and Win 7 disks. One thing I had trouble with was getting the XP to install and I think I booted into safe mode somewhere along the line. I'm not saying this is easy but you just need to keep trying oh I rememmber what kept happening was when computer restarted it went past the bios screen in an instant and I couldnt 'catch it'. Eventually did. his still seems to be an issue...I have to tap a key to get the boot partition screen to stop otherwise it flashes past and reboots. his might be something to do with the keyboard? or a BIOS setting? I dont know...I just hit a key while the bios is starting and it stops at the dual boot screen. Oh when I switch OS I have to go around the BIOS twice for some reason the dual boot screen wont stay put on the first pass. These are small irritations...I mainly use Win 7 but now can use all that software I bought that runs on XP only. By the way, I find the machine to be quite quick- I had a Dell Latitude 430 before and I dont see much difference in speed and of course the battery is brilliant-i charge up go out work for 6 hours and come home. ust hope the battery doesnt degrade too quickly (my Dell was down to 45 minutes on a charge).

Anyhow, once again, thanks for this blog it really helped me and I hope some of my comments can help others.

Can't get access to backups either from a Vista or Win 7 client. Spent three hours on phone with HP Media Server guys. I get the identical "cannot mount" message and 81% stall as above. We also tried running mountvol /E at the cmd line as admin. Not sure where this one came from, but that is one of the trees HP is running. Updated to PP3. Could it be that the original backup was PP2, that there are issues with database across the updates? Hmmm. Sure wish HP or MSFT would post a troubleshooting tree with all the tricks. Could be a combo that would work for most.

One of my client drives failed this week. All our photos since we went digital in 1999 (200GB). My wife has been crying. Kinda sad, and you can imagine I am a little stressed. I am gonna try the hard drive angle using a data recovery tool next.

I can tell you this, I will never again trust a backup server and will be back to manual weekly backups.

Thanks! I have been puzzling for hours why my table became bigger (or smaller) then specified in IE, while it worked fine in Firefox. This simple line of code saved my day!

I very much doubt that Microsoft will release a new version of media center in the windows 7 timeframe. As far as they are concerned, it basically works. So I doubt that we will see html5, or flash, or any other improvements in windows 7 media center ever.

I imagine that microsoft are thinking beyond media center on a PC for post-windows 7, i.e. widgets embedded in a TV, or embedded devices rather than requiring a full blown PC running on the front end. Who knows what that'll be based on?

From your experience, so you think MS will be smart enough to enable at least html5 in MCE ? :)
