That's a very good point. Who doesn't have a dormant hotmail account or two knocking around?

I do wonder about those reported figures for Hotmail and Yahoo Mail since I have accounts on all three but haven't used my Yahoo Mail seriously for at least a decade and only use my Hotmail account for situations where I don't trust the recipient or the site I'm using it on.

I wonder how many of those 343 million Hotmail accounts and 266 million Yahoo Mail accounts are actually active? I have a feeling that with Gmail being the newer service and with it being a so much more usable, the proportion of active Gmail accounts will be much higher.
